Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of myths and legends

This ancient story tells of a fearsome lindworm that once lived on the Wurmfeld, a marshy meadow slope on the southern shore of the lake. The dragon spread fear and terror among the residents and devoured the cattle of the farmers and shepherds. The brave shepherds and hunters of the region devised an ingenious plan to put a stop to the monster. They filled an old cowhide with moss and gunpowder, shaped it into a living dummy cow and placed it on the shore of the lake. When the lindworm devoured the supposed prey, the package exploded and the dragon died. However, some versions of the legend tell a different story: the lindworm did not die, but was only seriously injured. Since then, it has retreated to the deep Tappenkarsee, where it gnaws at the rocks. One day, it is said, it will be strong enough to burst the rocks and flood the valley with the water of the lake.

This legend makes the hike to Tappenkarsee a special experience. As you walk along the well-signposted path, you can imagine in your mind how the dragon once terrified the region. Once at the top, the first view of the lake, surrounded by an impressive mountain backdrop, quickly makes you forget the exertions of the ascent. Experience the magic of this legend for yourself and immerse yourself in the mystical atmosphere of the Tappenkarsees.
